Author,  Dr. Thomas  J. Hudson,  'The Law of Psychic Phenomena'   Quote:

The man who denies the phenomena of spiritualism today is not entitled to be called a skeptic,  he is simply ignorant"

Go To INTRODUCTION: Cora L.V. Richmond

Cora L.V. Richmond, Vice President & Originator of: National Spiritualists Association.
Enemies of Spiritualism  & The 1897 N.S.A Meeting
Notes:  To bring order out of Spiritualism's Chaos, it was Cora L.V.  Richmond that first gave birth to the idea that formed the  National Spiritualist Association [ today's N.S.A.C. ].   She become it's Vice President.

The chaos:  Spiritualism being attacked by the ecclesiastical control of the government with attempts to change the constitution.  Actions by the National lAnti-Spiritualists Association. Fraudulent mediumship and  mind reading which is not mediumship.  And, the blows to Spiritualism by many spies.  The revealed and prosecuted fraud that found  Madame H.R. Blavatsky guilty.  Madame Blavatsky of Theosophical Society fame, named her fraud 'Spiritualism' in the Court to discredit Spiritualism.  Today, because of the trickery usage of the name 'Spiritualism' by it's enemies, the world became skeptical and confused.

[See Book: Madam Blavatsky's Baboon: A history of Mystics, Mediums, and Misfits Who Brought Spiritualism To America]
  • Modern Spiritualism was born in America in 1848 and has NOTHING to do with these tricksters.
  • Spiritualism has been scientifically proven.
  • Theosophy is only a theory and maybe closer to Spiritism; attracting soulless spirits of non progressing elementalism.
  • Theosophy is not anything like Spiritualism which comes from the Spirit world for progression of Souls.
  • Cora was America's most important and longest standing medium of Higher Spiritualism ~ Inspirational Trance Mediumship. Together with  H.D. Barrett as President and the editor of the Banner of Light, publishing all her weekly addresses, they set the standard for higher Spiritualism; sending only good mediums to do missionary work demonstrations across America.  The notes below will show the success.   For more history go to:  http://www.spirithistory.com/index.html

We only realize today with deep research, how a few well known names in Spiritualism were also badly misled in their day.  Maybe it was ego, or, they believed their ideas were 'higher' or 'better' or, maybe they had lost their gift of mediumship.  It seems likely that loss of the true gift was caused by going against Spiritualism.  Had these mediums failed a test set for them by Spirit?  They seem to us now to have changed sides after venturing away from Spiritualism or, tried to be on both sides?  It has been said by Spirit: Many will come but, few will stay true.

Dr. Peebles, arguing for better spiritual ministry, said “there are those on the spiritual platform who are revolting to true Spiritualists.”

Two cases in point: #1, did he mean Emma Hardinge-Britten who helped  #2, Madam Blavatsky to found the Theosophical Society? There was the spiritually destructive action of  Emma's publishing of the very low 'dark-side' book:  ART MAGIC-SPIRITISM  using the money from many Spiritualists to publish this 'destructive to Spiritualists' book while at the same time, temporarily taking some 500 away from Spiritualism and into Spiritism.  The shock to Spiritualism and its followers of Emma now known as a dark side occultist on seeing ART MAGIC-SPIRITISM  when published, caused Emma to leave America quickly and go back to England.

Similar to Madame Blavatsky, immediately leaving America for India after her 'fraud' Court case; the dirty deed done.  Why was Peebles also involved in Theosophy which we now know, with it's reincarnation and Karma is false?  How could Peebles be involved with Olcott in India?  Was Pebbles a spy for, or against Spiritualism?  In 1897, the year of this report below,  Blavatsky had been in the Spirit world since 1891. Is this why, when going over to the Spirit world himself, he chose to put matters right by assisting in rescue circles; helping lost spirits in the astral world, caught in the darkness because of the dangerous, erroneous beliefs of Theosophy and Karma? See books:  Thirty Years Among The Dead  and  The Gateway Of Understanding  by Carl Wickland, MD; see sections on Theosophy, including Blavatsky rescue work in the Spirit world.]

Cora,  to maintain higher Spiritualism made Chicago her home with her new husband, William Richmond.  This was at the time of the long lasting Comstock book burnings which started in New York (the attempted destruction of our freedoms). Her first books as 'Richmond' were published in England.

In the times of the Comstock inquisitions and book burnings, many of the best books showing the highest Light of Spiritualism and works by Thomas Paine were destroyed  under the term 'pornography' in the late 1800s to early 1900s and publishers, book sellers and mediums were thrown into prison, most died there.  We have all but forgotten Cora's wonderful trance teachings because of successful deceit and intent to hide and destroy  Spiritualism's most prolific books and lecture pamphlets by Cora L.V. (Scott) (Hatch) (Tappan) Richmond.  Literature of wonderful spiritual  wisdom given by her many high raised spirit teachers and guides, representing 70 years of dedicated service, are almost lost today.  Especially,  we must not lose site of Ouina, her refined  philosophy will always be waiting for us to discover her gentle guidance and wisdom for the future world yet to come.  Cora was America's longest lasting and most consistent medium;  one of the most respected and well known of her day.

Next week we hope to give a report of the proceedings.

Excerpts from  the: The Philosophical Journal, November 4, 1897 of the   (Thomas G. Newman), “The National Convention,”

Delegates and Spiritualists generally from almost every State and Canada gathered at the hall in Masonic Temple, Washington, D. C., at 10 a.m., Oct. 19, 1897.

There were about 150 delegates with badges of yellow and white ribbon, lettered N. S. A. [N.S.A.C. today]  The hall was tastily decorated, and the platform was filled with flowers.  The officers were all present.  We gather the following report from the Washington dailies:

After an invocation by Mrs. Cora. L. V. Richmond, Pres. Barrett made the opening address, outlining the business to be done, and appealed to all the delegates to strive for the best results.  He then made the following appointments:

Mrs. Cora L. V. Richmond, Vice President of N.S.A., welcomed the delegates to Washington in an appropriate address and reminded them of what they owed Spiritualism and themselves and abjured them to work so that there would be no just cause for criticism.  She felt certain, she said, that if proper methods were employed, the cause of Spiritualism would gain recruits throughout the length and breadth of the land.  All that was needed was a proper exposition of the great truths which Spiritualism contains.

    Pres. Barrett’s Report.

He cited the National Anti-Spiritualists Association as evidence of the fact that its opponents are becoming alarmed as to the increase of interest in Spiritualism.  Another evidence of progress is the strong determination manifest on all sides among intelligent Spiritualists to draw the line of demarcation between fraudulent and genuine mediums.  The fraud must go.

He recommended that the mass meetings be continued next year, numbering two per month for the next eight months, and that grove meetings be held during the months of May, June, July, August and September of next year.

He recommended that a history of Modern Spiritualism from 1848 to the present time be immediately undertaken by the National Spiritualists’ Association, and that the work should be placed in the hands of Mr. Lyman C. Howe, of Fredonia, N. Y.

[Note: Barrett had already written a large book in 1895 covering the History of Higher Spiritualism from 1852 to date:
THE LIFE WORK OF CORA L.V. RICHMOND - 1895]

    Secretary’s Report.

The report of Secretary Woodbury, showed that the membership of the Association had increased 33 per cent the past year.  Six State Associations were formed during this time, a temple was dedicated at Norwich, Conn., and several local Associations settled pastors.  The library here has been increased by several hundred volumes, and the Veteran Spiritualists’ Union of Massachusetts purchased a home at Waverly for poor Spiritualists.  The Spiritualists had co-operated with others to fight ecclesiastical control of the government, and had opposed the changing of the constitution.

The Association had determined to put two missionaries in the field to offset the work of the Anti-Spiritualists’ Association.

Special Agent Bowman, of California, rendered a report of the money he had collected, and the number of meetings and State Conventions he had attended.

Reports were read recommending the organization of Young People’s societies and approving the organization of reading circles for the study of spiritual and other literature.  In the discussion on educational facilities the support of spiritual schools was advocated.

Dr. Peebles, arguing for better spiritual ministry, said “there are those on the spiritual platform who are revolting to true Spiritualists.”

The National Spiritualists’ Lyceum Association was organized by the Convention, with the following officers: James B. Hatch, Jr., Massachusetts, National Conductor; Charles W. Stanglen, Maryland, Assistant Conductor; Mrs. Mary J. Stevens, District of Columbia, Guardian; Mrs. Mattie E. Hull, Massachusetts, Secretary; and W. H. Bach, New York, Treasurer.

By cash subscriptions and pledges from individual delegates and representatives of branch Associations and societies $2,695 was raised for the purpose of carrying on the work of the Association during the year ending October 1, 1898.  The election of officers was unanimous, and resulted as follows:

President, Harrison D. Barrett, of Boston, Mass.; Vice-President, Mrs. Cora L. V. Richmond, of Washington, D. C.; Secretary, Francis B. Woodbury, of Washington, D. C.; Treasurer, George S. Clendaniel, of Washington, D. C.; trustees, C. H. Stockwell, of Tennessee; L. V. Moulton, of Michigan; Allen F. Brown, of Texas; H. W. Richardson, of New York, and George A. Fuller, of Massachusetts.

At the evening session the closing scenes of the Convention were enacted:  Addresses were made by Moses Hull, C. Fannie Allyn, Frank Walker, L. V. Moulton, F. A. Wiggin and Mrs. Carrie F. Loring.  Medium tests were made by J. H. Altemus and Miss Maggie Gaule.  The closing address was delivered by Mrs. Cora L. V. Richmond.
